Abstract

The environment plays a central role in shaping students’ morals and ethics, encompassing three main dimensions: the family environment, higher education institutions, and the digital society. In the digital era, these three dimensions face increasingly complex challenges alongside the massive growth of information technology and social media usage. This article aims to examine the influence of both physical and digital environments on the moral and ethical development of university students, as well as to identify various ethical problems emerging as their consequences. This study uses an empirical research design with a descriptive quantitative approach by distributing questionnaires to university students as respondents. The results show that the digital environment has a dual impact. On one side, it helps expand students’ moral perspectives through easy access to global information. On the other side, it also brings various ethical challenges such as plagiarism, cyberbullying, social media addiction, and the spread of hoaxes. The family still plays a key role as the main foundation in shaping moral values, although this role is often limited by differences in digital literacy between generations. Meanwhile, universities are expected to integrate ethics education and digital literacy into their curricula in a more structured way. Therefore, comprehensive efforts involving families, universities, governments, and students as agents of change are needed to build a generation that is not only intellectually capable but also strong in morals and ethics in the digital era.
