Self-Esteem as Predisposing Factor to Violent Behaviour among Secondary School Students in Ondo State

Abstract

The study investigated the frequency of violent behaviour among secondary school students in Ondo State. It also examined the influence of self-esteem on violent behaviour among the students. The population for the study consisted 18,789 secondary school students and 3,273 teachers in Ondo State. A sample of 1,260 (5.7%) respondents consisting of 1,200 students and 60 teachers respectively were selected for the study using multistage sampling procedure. Two research instruments namely Students’ Predisposition to Violent Behaviour Scale (SPVS) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using percentages, t-test and simple linear regression. The results showed that secondary school students in Ondo State exhibited low (18.1%), moderate (61.0%) and high (20.1%) levels of violent behaviour respectively. Self-esteem with β-value as -0.232 which was significant p > 0.05 level of significance. This implies that students with negative self-esteem were prone to exhibit violent behaviour. The study concluded that students’ violent behaviour could be curbed by paying attention to their self-esteem.
