Plan, implement and institutionalise: The three phases of a supply chain resiliency programme that can deliver robust ROI

Abstract

The paper describes the three-phase journey to a mature, resilient-stage supply chain resiliency programme (SCRP) that can deliver return-on-investment (ROI) of as much as US$15m per US$1bn in annual sales. Written for supply chain professionals with varying levels of experience, the paper outlines the core elements of the three phases: plan, implement and institutionalise. Key tasks in the plan phase include developing the business case, estimating ROI, overcoming objections, creating service agreements with internal customers, defining metrics and building a team and governance structure. Implementation builds on four core services essential to building a resilient supply chain: risk intelligence, risk monitoring and response, risk analysis and risk treatment. Institutionalising an SCRP requires continuous education and change management by the core supply chain team and can ultimately yield far-reaching results such as integrating resiliency into new product design and achieving significantly enhanced brand value.
