Riding a tidal wave: Managing reputation in the face of an industry sea change

Abstract

The news landscape is in flux and more fragmented than it has ever been. Previously, the production and publication of news was managed by a relatively symbiotic relationship between journalists and public relations professionals. Today, new channels, outlets and tactics have led to an increasingly complex set of challenges for both parties — and a whole new web of influencers and relationships besides. This paper analyses the impacts of the changes on the communications landscape and concludes that while on the surface the disruption has been vast, fundamentally, the central tenets of public relations and reputation management remain largely unchanged.
