The real world of real estate: How economics and geopolitics affect occupiers

Abstract

An assessment of some of the key geopolitical events of 2016 might lead to the conclusion that there are more sources of uncertainty than usual for corporate decision makers to consider. Viewed from the long-term perspective of the economic cycle, however, the influence of geopolitical events looks a lot more muted. In this paper we investigate the question of how much credence to give geopolitics in the context of corporate real estate decisions, and develop a typology that will assist decision makers in distinguishing between largely irrelevant events and more impactful ones, based on their characteristics and degree of linkage with the economic cycle.
