La canasta de consumo popular en la ciudad de Buenos Aires a fines del siglo XIX

Abstract

A fin de completar la evolución del consumo y del nivel de vida de la población de la ciudad de Buenos Aires durante el siglo xix, se han elaborado canastas basadas en el modelo Allen, comparables con las reconstruidas para el lapso 1796-1875. El trabajo se basa en fuentes publicadas de la década de 1890, que relevaron datos acerca del consumo de mano de obra no calificada de la ciudad, así como de personal calificado. El resultado demuestra una caída en el nivel de ingreso de los no calificados, de modo que para mantener la ecuación requerida entre consumo y salarios de la primera mitad fue necesario incorporar otros ingresos al hogar proporcionados, en general, por el trabajo de la mujer y de un hijo mayor, con el consiguiente deterioro del nivel de vida de la familia.
