Preschoolers Participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women

Abstract

An ERS researcher and non-ERS collaborators used national survey data to compare milk choices of children between 1 and 4 years of age. About 80 percent of the children consumed some type of cow’s milk on the survey day. Toddlers participating in WIC were more likely to drink whole milk than lower income non-WIC toddlers. Preschoolers participating in WIC were more likely to drink low or nonfat milk than both lower and higher income non-WIC preschoolers.
