Smart development finance strategies: A balance of payments perspective

Abstract

The prospect of an increased role for private capital in development finance opens questions about aligning development finance strategies with the investment objectives of private capital providers. Both the economic theory and the observable data suggest that a balance of payments perspective can provide a useful framework for aligning development finance strategies in a manner that sustains the realisation of broader social and ecological investment objectives over time.
