Unified financial services regulation in Sub-Sahara Africa

Abstract

This article is an exploratory study of the structure and models of unified financial services regulation in sub-Sahara Africa. The study examines the emerging trend in some African countries of merging separate financial regulatory bodies into a single unified regulatory body to regulate or supervise two or more segments of the financial sector that were previously regulated or supervised separately by the now merged regulatory bodies. While the article focusses on the structure and models of unified financial regulators in contemporary sub-Sahara Africa, it also acknowledges closely related developments in parallel jurisdictions in Europe, Asia, the Pacific areas, Latin America, the Caribbean islands, and North America.
