Towards a new architecture for sustainable finance in EMDEs

Abstract

On September 21, 2021, the World Bank’s released its updated Groundswell Report which concluded that climate change, an increasingly potent driver of migration, could force 216 million people across six world regions to move within their countries by 2050. In 2018 alone, 17.2 million new displacements associated with disasters in 148 countries and territories were recorded and drought displaced 764,000 people in Somalia, Afghanistan and several other countries. Drought and famine in the Horn of Africa, catastrophic floods in Durban and deadly heatwaves in North Africa are all evidence of a continent fighting a climate crisis with increasingly high stake outcomes for leaders within Africa’s development finance arena.
