Motorcycle transport risk management

Abstract

Motorcycle transport plays a vital role in urban mobility in many developing countries due to its affordability, speed, and ability to navigate congested and remote areas. It also provides employment opportunities, particularly for young people. However, its use is associated with significant risks, including accidents, pollution, theft, and legal challenges, often driven by unsafe practices and inadequate rider education. This paper examines these risks and highlights key loss control measures such as safety enforcement, infrastructure improvement, and public education, alongside loss financing strategies including fines, taxes and insurance. It further emphasises the role of insurance in providing financial protection against losses and supporting affected individuals. Overall, effective risk management and increased insurance awareness are essential to ensure the safety and sustainability of motorcycle transport.
