Africa's electrostate prospects: Mineral wealth, renewable energy, and the hard road to industrialisation

Abstract

The current closure of the strait of Hormuz and broader potential for persistent energy price shocks in a frac- turing global political economy raises questions as to whether Africa will be able to convert its extraordinary natural endowments into durable industrialisation. The answer, this essay argues, is nuanced. Full electro- static status is a stretch but a more localised dynamic, in which renewable energy and critical minerals inter- act to create pockets of industrial deepening within value chains, offers a realistic pathway.
