Charting the way forward for cooperative sustainability in the face of external forces

Abstract

South African cooperatives, which are renowned for their capacity to promote inclusive economic development, encounter numerous external obstacles that impede their sustainability and expansion. These include an intricate legislative environment, financial marginalization, insufficient capital, rivalry in the marketplace, technological constraints, climate change, and weak youth engagement to ensure continuity in the sector. Through a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature, the study exposes critical strategies in charting the way forward for cooperative sustainability in the face of external forces. These changes must include the establishment of networks, the adoption of inventive technology, climate resilience, and youth engagement. Cooperatives have the potential to not only endure but also to act as powerful catalysts for inclusive, people-centred development, thereby promoting social and economic justice across the nation. This can be accomplished by fostering collaboration among the business sector, civil society,and government.
