Abstract

-- The paper deals with the role of new firm formation in regional development. Many of the effects of the new firms are of indirect nature and do not necessarily become effective in the region in which a new firm is set up. Empirical analyses for West German regions show that an impact of new firm formation can only be found for the development in the 1990s, but not for the 1980s. There are indications that a considerable part of the impact of new firm formation on regional development is long term in nature. In East Germany the impact of new firm formation on growth seems to be much stronger than in the western part.
