Efecto de las tutorías sobre el rendimiento académico: evidencia de estudiantes de economía

Abstract

En este trabajo evaluamos cómo las tutorías entre estudiantes influyen en el rendimiento académico de estudiantes de economía en una de las mejores universidades de Colombia. Utilizamos datos de estudiantes repitentes y no repitentes. Por esto, para identificar el efecto causal, empleamos dos enfoques metodológicos diferentes: diferencia en diferencias (repitentes) y matching por vecino más cercano (no repitentes). Nuestros resultados muestran que asistir a las tutorías, facilitadas por otros estudiantes, mejora las calificaciones de los cursos. En promedio, el efecto es de 0.55 desviaciones estándar del rendimiento para los estudiantes que repiten, y de 0.18 desviaciones estándar para los que no repiten. Encontramos efectos heterogéneos por género (las mujeres experimentan un efecto mayor), tamano de grupo de estudio, sede y facultad a la que pertenecen los estudiantes. La triangulación con información obtenida en grupos focales con estudiantes-tutores confirma estos resultados. Los resultados mencionados son robustos a varias pruebas econométricas y diferentes especificaciones.
