Abstract

La fonction de consommation a rarement ete etudiee sur une longue periode bien qu'elle soit l'emploi principal de la production. En general, on l'aborde sous l'angle de l'epargne : les auteurs se demandent si le manque d'epargne n'a pas entrave la croissance. C'est pourquoi une attention particuliere est portee soit a l'epargne forcee due a l'inflation, ou a l'endettement consecutif a l'achat des logements, soit a l'epargne volontaire liee au developpement des marches financiers. Dans cet article, nous prenons le contre-pied de cette approche en etudiant directement la fonction de consommation. Deja, lors de la publication de "Valeur et Capital", Hicks montrait que l'explication de la demande de consommation dependait crucialement de la definition du revenu plutot que des variables qui influencent la propension a consommer. Reprenant le fil de cette analyse, nous etudions dans cet article les facteurs explicatifs de la propension a consommer en fonction de la repartition du revenu, de l'inflation, du chomage, de la richesse et des formes de detention de cette derniere.
