Abstract

[eng] French Society Carried Along by its Central Constellation Henri Mendras Today the hierarchical and pyramidal vision of society seems to be out of date as does the marxist vision. A « cosmographie » vision seems more relevant in accounting for the recent transformations of French society. An expanding central constellation and a shrinking popular constellation are surrounded by peripheral groups : managers, the poor and the excluded, and the indépendant professions. Within the galaxy, dynamic constellations launch fashions and spread innovations. Hence social and cultural power is becoming distinct from political and economical power.
