Abstract

[eng] Subsistence, Monetary and Subjective Poverty Are Distinct Notions . The poor are those who do not have enough money to live decently, those who are deprived of everyday consumer goods and staples, or those who find it hard to attain what they feel to be a minimum level of comfort. Are the same households simultaneously defined as poor by these three criteria? . Three scales are drawn up to rank households based on the subjective, monetary and living conditions criteria. A definition of the basket of appropriate goods and consumables normally used and deemed necessary by the majority of the population is required to score living conditions as the sum of hardships. These choices can only be made using survey data on the provision or deprivation of these goods. . When the same percentage of "poor" households (approximately 10%) is isolated at the bottom of the three scales, three populations are found with only partial coverage. Whereas one-quarter of the population bears at least one or other mark of poverty, only 6% bear two and just 2% the three at the same time.
