Abstract

The occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Journal of the Operational Research Society provides the opportunity for reflection and reminiscing about Operational Research (OR). In this note a personal reflection on the nature of OR is offered. Some ideas are suggested to account for the success and failure of OR and some challenges are noted for its forward progress.
