Regional Inequality in Germany: Where Do the Rich Live and Where Do the Poor Live?

Abstract

Looking at the spatial distribution of the highest and lowest household incomes, it is apparent that a disproportionately high number of the richest 10 percent of households live in the south and in the large cities of western Germany in particular. In contrast, a disproportionately high number of the poorest 40 percent live in eastern German districts. Nevertheless, a convergence of the regions has been discernible over the past ten years, driven not least by the catching-up process in eastern Germany.
