    Abstract

    Ôsmeho marca 1963 vojenský prevrat uskutočnený koalíciou baasistických, nāsirovských a nezávislých panarabsky orientovaných politikov zvrhol „odštiepenecký režim“ v Damasku. Keď armáda prevzala moc, vytvorila Národnú revolučnú radu, ktorej predsedom sa stal generálporučík Lu’aj al-Atāsī. Ten poveril jedného z vodcov Socialistickej strany arabskej obrody (Strany Baas), aby vytvoril vládu, ktorej členmi budú vojaci aj civilisti. Jedným z prvých činov novej vlády bolo vydanie vyhlásenia, v ktorom uviedla, že jej cieľom je viesť Sýriu do opätovného zjednotenia s Egyptom, tentoraz spolu s Irakom. Generál Lu’aj al-Atāsī zároveň vyhlásil, že armáda bola zbavená odštiepeneckých elementov, vrátane bývalých ministrov. Krátko nato, znova výrazne vzrástol počet predstaviteľov menšín v dôstojníckom zbore sýrskej armády, na úkor väčšinových sunnitov. Hlavným dôvodom tohto javu bolo, že vojenskí velitelia, členovia Strany Baas, ktorí sa podieľali na prevrate, aktivovali mnohých dôstojníkov a poddôstojníkov na základe rodinných, kmeňových alebo regionálnych zväzkov, aby čo najrýchlejšie upevnili svoje novonadobudnuté mocenské pozície.
