Mehr als sieben magere Jahre? Nahrungsmittelkrisen und Hungerunruhen als neues politisches Risiko

Abstract

Die aktuellen politischen Unruhen in Nordafrika und im Nahen Osten gehen auch auf Proteste gegen steigende Lebensmittelpreise zurück. Seit der Jahrtausendwende haben vor allem Preisausschläge nach oben stark zugenommen, und dieser Trend hält an. Die Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen (FAO) diagnostiziert für 29 Länder Versorgungskrisen, die nicht ohne externe Hilfe bewältigt werden können. Für 2011 prognostiziert sie weitere Ernteeinbrüche und Versorgungsengpässe. Die Versorgungslage wird sich vor allem in den schnell wachsenden Ballungsgebieten der ärmsten Länder verschlechtern. Was können Deutschland und die Europäische Union unternehmen, um das Risiko von Nahrungsmittelkrisen und Hungerunruhen zu vermindern?
