Der Wald als Klimaretter? Waldschutz bringt neuen Schwung in die festgefahrenen Klimaverhandlungen

Abstract

Ein umfassendes, rechtlich verbindliches Klimaschutzabkommen ist kurzfristig kaum zu verwirklichen. Allerdings bestehen Chancen, bei den Klimaverhandlungen in Cancún 2010 oder Südafrika 2011 ein Abkommen zur Reduzierung entwaldungsbedingter Emissionen (REDD plus) zu schließen. Weltweit emittiert die Forstwirtschaft mehr Treibhausgase als der gesamte Transportsektor. Waldschutz ist daher effektiver und zudem besonders kostengünstiger Klimaschutz. Daneben könnte REDD plus helfen, Nord-Süd-Blockaden in den internationalen Klimaverhandlungen zu überwinden. Damit das Abkommen sein volles Potential entfalten kann, sollten Deutschland und die EU auf einen baldigen Abschluss hinwirken. Weiterhin sollten sie multilaterale Pilotmaßnahmen für einen schnellen Start von REDD plus aktiv unterstützen
