Die Wiederkehr von al-Qaida: Aktuelle Entwicklungen im internationalen Terrorismus und ihre Folgen für Europa

Abstract

Die Führungsspitze der al-Qaida um Usama Bin Laden und seinen Stellvertreter Aiman az-Zawahiri hat das Jahr 2007 zu einer bisher beispiellosen Öffentlichkeitskampagne genutzt. Nie zuvor waren die führenden Vertreter der Organisation so häufig in Video- und Audiobotschaften zu sehen und zu hören. Bisheriger Höhepunkt dieser Kampagne war ein Videoband von Anfang September 2007, in dem Bin Laden erstmals seit dem Jahr 2004 auf bewegten Bildern erschien und den Krieg im Irak und die amerikanische Präsenz in Afghanistan scharf kritisierte. Diese erhöhten Aktivitäten werfen die Frage auf, ob sie auf eine Schwächung der al Qaida zurückgehen und damit als mediale Rückzugsgefechte, oder aber als Zeichen einer neuen Stärke zu interpretieren sind, die lediglich medial untermauert wird.
