Taiwan wählt: Parlamentswahlen im Zeichen von Politikverdrossenheit und Parteimisstrauen

Abstract

Bei den Parlamentswahlen in Taiwan am 12. Januar 2008 errang die frühere Festlandspartei Kuomintang (KMT, »blaues Lager«) eine Zweidrittelmehrheit der Sitze, mit der sie aus eigener Kraft die Verfassung ändern könnte. Die für die Unabhängigkeit Taiwans eintretende Demokratische Fortschrittspartei (DPP, »grünes Lager«) konnte nur 27 der 113 Sitze gewinnen. Der unerwartete Erdrutschsieg der KMT hat Implikationen nicht nur für die Präsidentschaftswahlen am 22. März und die gleichzeitig durchzuführenden Referenden über einen Beitritt des Inselstaates zu den Vereinten Nationen, die bei China, den USA und der EU auf Kritik stoßen. Entscheidend sind diese Entwicklungen vor allem auch für die künftigen Beziehungen Taiwans zur Volksrepublik China. Diese standen während der achtjährigen Präsidentschaft Chen Shui-bians (DPP) unter Dauerbelastung und gelten im Jahr der Wahlen in Taiwan und der Olympischen Spiele in China als besonders fragil. Die Hoffnung auf bessere Beziehungen und mehr Stabilität kann sich nur erfüllen, wenn keine der beiden Seiten übertriebene Erwartungen hegt
