Die Kongresswahlen in den USA: "Eine neue Richtung für Amerika?"

Abstract

Die amerikanischen Wähler haben sich entschieden: nicht nur gegen Bush und seine Irakpolitik, sondern auch für eine Politik der Mitte und einen Kongress, der seiner Kontrollfunktion im System der »Checks and Balances« besser nachkommt. Mit einem Zugewinn von 30 Sitzen - endgültige Ergebnisse in einigen Wahlkreisen stehen noch aus - eroberten die Demokraten im Repräsentantenhaus eine klare Mehrheit; im Senat kommen sie wie die Republikaner auf 49 Mandate. Mit den beiden unabhängigen, den Demokraten nahe stehenden Senatoren Bernie Sanders und Joseph Lieberman ergibt dies 51 Sitze und so auch hier eine Mehrheit. Eine wirklich »neue Richtung für Amerika«, wie es die Demokraten in ihrem Wahlprogramm forderten, wird indes nicht eingeschlagen werden. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
