Abstract

In zwei programmatischen Reden hat Präsident Bush im November 2003 die Ausrichtung amerikanischer Außenpolitik auf die Förderung der Demokratie im Nahen und Mittleren Osten bekräftigt und begründet. Wie noch kein Präsident vor ihm plädierte er für die Überwindung einer seit Jahrzehnten verfolgten, aber verfehlten, weil primär an der Stabilität befreundeter autokratischer Regime orientierten Politik. Eine »nach vorne gerichtete Strategie der Freiheit« im Nahen und Mittleren Osten gilt als zentrales Element des Kampfes gegen den Terrorismus. Wie sieht diese Politik tatsächlich aus, auf welchen Annahmen beruht sie, welche Probleme sind mit ihr verbunden? (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
