Taiwans bedrohte Demokratie hält Kurs: Die Angst vor Chinas Diktatur verhilft Taiwans Präsidentin zu einem Erdrutschsieg

Abstract

Am 11. Januar fanden in Taiwan Präsidentschafts- und Parlamentswahlen statt. Die Insel ist de facto ein souveräner Staat und eine konsolidierte Demokratie, wird jedoch von der Volksrepublik China beansprucht. Die seit 2016 regierende Präsi­dentin Taiwans, Tsai Ing‑wen, und ihre Demokratische Fortschrittspartei (DPP) haben beide Wahlen mit deutlicher Mehrheit gewonnen. Die DPP betont Taiwans De‑facto-Unabhängigkeit. Die größte Oppositionspartei Kuomintang (KMT) steht für eine engere wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit dem chinesischen Festland. Der Wahlkampf war geprägt vom zunehmenden Druck Pekings auf die Insel und von den Protesten in Hongkong. Hongkong dient den Taiwanern als Warnung davor, was passieren könnte, wenn Taiwan sich zu eng ans Festland anlehnt oder sich gar mit ihm vereinigt: Der Inselstaat könnte seine Demokratie und Freiheit verlieren.
