Abstract

Der Nahe und Mittlere Osten wird in den nächsten Jahren, wenn nicht Jahrzehnten, zum Zentrum internationaler geopolitischer Ordnungsbemühungen und Auseinandersetzungen werden und damit europäisch-amerikanische Beziehungen weitgehend definieren. Die US-Regierung hat sich die Neuordnung der Region auf ihre Fahnen geschrieben und dem mit der Ankündigung einer »Greater Middle East Initiative« (GMEI) Ausdruck gegeben, für die sie bei den bevorstehenden Gipfeltreffen der Nato und der G 8 im Sommer 2004 ein transatlantisches Plazet suchen wird.
