Die "Schlacht um Omdurman" und ihre Folgen für den Frieden im Sudan

Abstract

Am 10. Mai 2008 fielen 2000 Kämpfer der Sudanesischen Bewegung für Gerechtigkeit und Gleichberechtigung (Justice and Equality Movement, JEM) aus Darfur in Omdurman ein, einer Stadt unmittelbar vor der Toren der Hauptstadt Khartum. Halten oder auch nur kurzfristig kontrollieren konnten sie Omdurman nicht. Es gelang ihnen ebenso wenig, über eine der Nilbrücken ins moderne Machtzentrum Khartums vorzustoßen. Die JEM verfehlte somit auch ihr Ziel, die Regierung in Khartum zu stürzen. Gleichzeitig droht in Abyei, an der Grenze zwischen Nord- und Südsudan, der Friedensvertrag zwischen der Regierung und der Südsudanesischen Befreiungsbewegung (Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement, SPLA/M) zu scheitern. Das Land ist von einer friedlichen Entwicklung weiter entfernt denn je
