Die sicherheitspolitischen Folgen des Klimawandels: Kanada und die Frage der arktischen Souveränität

Abstract

Vom 27. bis zum 29. Mai 2008 haben sich in Ilulissat/Grönland auf Einladung Dänemarks die fünf Anrainerstaaten der Arktis (Dänemark, Kanada, USA, Russland und Norwegen) getroffen, um über Konflikte zu diskutieren, die sich in den vergangenen Jahren aus den als Folge des Klimawandels vermehrten Möglichkeiten zur Nutzung der Region ergeben haben. Die kanadische Regierung verfolgte dabei eine Politik der »arktischen Souveränität« und betonte wieder einmal, dass sie die kanadischen Ansprüche in der Arktis mit allen politischen und rechtlichen Mitteln durchzusetzen bereit sei. Deutsche und europäische Bemühungen, die Politik in der Arktis stärker einem internationalen Regelwerk zu unterwerfen und regionale Kooperation zu fördern, müssen daher die Politik Ottawas in besonderem Maße berücksichtigen
