Liberia wählt - Frau oder Fußballstar?

Abstract

Zum ersten Mal in seiner Geschichte haben in Liberia freie und faire Wahlen stattgefunden. Etwa 1,35 Millionen registrierte Wähler waren am 11. Oktober aufgerufen, den Präsidenten und die zwei Kammern des Parlaments neu zu bestimmen, welche die vor zwei Jahren eingesetzten Übergangsinstitutionen ablösen. Da keiner der beiden Präsidentschaftskandidaten - der ehemalige Fußballstar George Weah und die Politikveteranin Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf - die absolute Mehrheit erreichte, wird am 8. November eine Stichwahl erfolgen. Die derzeit fast 16 000 Personen starke United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) hat nach 14 Jahren Krieg die Sicherheit im Land wiederhergestellt und damit demokratische Wahlen ermöglicht. Eine extern unterstützte Wahlkommission hat den Wahlprozeß erstmals unabhängig und in vorbildlicher Weise organisiert. Trotz dieser erfreulichen Etappensiege ist der Stabilisierungsprozeß noch lange nicht zu Ende. Eine erfolgreiche Fortführung bedarf eines noch Jahre andauernden Engagements der internationalen Gemeinschaft. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
