Ein Präsident - zwei Mexikos

Abstract

Nach einem wochenlangen 'Wahlkrimi' hat das Oberste Wahlgericht Mexikos am 5. September 2006 den Konservativen Felipe Calderón Hinojosa von der Partei der Nationalen Aktion (PAN) zum neuen Präsidenten des Landes erklärt. Der in der Wahl hauchdünn unterlegene Kandidat der Partei der Demokratischen Revolution (PRD) Andrés Manuel López Obrador erkannte diese Entscheidung jedoch nicht an und kündigte eine Fortführung der bereits seit Juli andauernden Proteste an. Neben dieser Infragestellung seiner Legitimität steht der neue Präsident, der laut Gesetz am 1. Dezember sein Amt antritt, vor einer Reihe weiterer Herausforderungen: Überfällige Reformen müssen angegangen, die öffentliche Sicherheit verbessert und die gravierenden sozialen Ungleichheiten entschärft werden. Angesichts der tiefen Spaltung des Landes sind die Regierbarkeit und internationale Handlungsfähigkeit Mexikos auf eine schwere Probe gestellt. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
