Transatlantischer Wirtschaftsrat unter Erfolgsdruck

Abstract

Am 13. Mai 2008 findet das zweite Treffen des Transatlantischen Wirtschaftsrats (TEC) statt. Das hochrangig besetzte Gremium, das auf dem EU-USA-Gipfel Ende April 2007 als Bestandteil der Rahmenvereinbarung zur Vertiefung der transatlantischen Wirtschaftsintegration geschaffen wurde, steht unter hohem Erfolgsdruck. Insbesondere angesichts der aktuellen protektionistischen Tendenzen in den USA muss der TEC vorzeigbare Ergebnisse liefern, um sich die politische Unterstützung einer neuen US-Administration zu sichern. Auch diesseits des Atlantiks stehen dem TEC große Herausforderungen bevor: Frankreich, das der transatlantischen Wirtschaftsintegration traditionell kritisch gegenübersteht, übernimmt im zweiten Halbjahr 2008 die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft; 2009 steht der Wechsel der EU-Kommission an. Gelingt es nicht, dem Vorhaben auf höchster politischer Ebene in den USA und der EU Unterstützung zu sichern, droht ihm das Schicksal früherer Absichtserklärungen zur transatlantischen Wirtschaftsintegration, denen kaum Taten gefolgt sind: Die Initiative würde im Sande verlaufen
