US-Verteidigungspolitik zwischen Isolationismus und Dominanzstreben: Widersprüche in Washington erfordern eine klare Antwort Europas

Abstract

Die US-amerikanische Verteidigungspolitik ist von Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet, die sich auch in den jüngsten Strategiedokumenten der Trump-Administration widerspiegeln. Die Ursachen dafür liegen weit tiefer als nur im erratischen Verhalten des Präsidenten. Im Kern geht es um die unbeantwortete Frage, wie die USA mit dem Verlust globaler Dominanz umgehen sollen. Für Europa liegen in dieser Gemengelage nicht nur Risiken, sondern auch Chancen. Die Politik sollte hierzulande dennoch nicht der trügerischen Hoffnung erliegen, dass die Nato in ihrer jetzigen Form auch die zweite Amtszeit von Trump überdauern wird.
