Eine Überraschung in Australien: Der Wahlsieg der Konservativen und seine Folgen für die Zusammenarbeit mit Europa

Abstract

Trotz bester Prognosen hat die australische Labor Party die nationalen Parlamentswahlen am 18. Mai 2019 verloren. Für die überraschende Niederlage der Sozial­demokraten machen viele Beobachter den wenig charismatischen Spitzenkandidaten Bill Shorten verantwortlich, ebenso das geringe Interesse der australischen Wähler an Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz. Gewonnen hat Premierminister Scott Morrison mit einem Wahlprogramm, das migrationskritisch ist und die Eigenverantwortung der Bürger betont. Die europäisch-australische Zusammenarbeit dürfte schwieriger werden, was Klimaschutz betrifft - leichter allerdings in Handelsfragen und bei der Entwicklung einer gemeinsamen Politik der OECD-Länder gegenüber China.
