Zeitenwende in Malaysia nach den Wahlen: Hoffnung auf politischen Wandel

Abstract

Seit der Unabhängigkeit Malaysias 1957 regierte ununterbrochen das Parteienbündnis Nationale Front (Barisan Nasional, BN) unter Führung der konservativen, malaiisch dominierten United National Organisation (UMNO). Aus den Parlamentswahlen im Mai 2018 ging indes zum ersten Mal die Opposition als Sieger hervor. Der neue Premier ist jedoch ein alter Bekannter: Mahathir bin Mohamad bekleidete schon zwischen 1981 und 2003 das Amt des Regierungschefs und war in dieser Zeit auch Parteivorsitzender der UMNO. Der deutliche Wahlsieg, den die Allianz der Hoffnung (Pakatan Harapan, PH) mit Mahathir an der Spitze verbuchte, eröffnet die ungeahnte Möglichkeit, das von endemischer Korruption durchsetzte, stark autoritär geprägte politische System des Landes zu liberalisieren. Mehr noch, Malaysias Wahlergebnis könnte über das Land hinaus von Bedeutung sein und den Oppositionsbewegungen in Nachbarländern wie Kambodscha, Thailand oder Singapur Auftrieb geben.
