Die Iran-Politik der Bush-Administration: Konfrontative Eindämmung und ihre Konsequenzen

Abstract

Die Irak-Intervention sollte die Machtverhältnisse am Persischen Golf dauerhaft zugunsten der USA verändern. Stattdessen wurde die Position Irans gestärkt und es dem Land leichter gemacht, seine Hegemonialbestrebungen zu verfolgen. Der Krieg, der auch der Demonstration amerikanischer Stärke in der Region dienen sollte, wurde zum Sinnbild amerikanischer Schwäche. Dem Eindruck des schwindenden Einflusses will die US-Regierung nun mit militärischem und diplomatischem Engagement entgegenwirken und eine anti-iranische Koalition aufbauen, eine De-facto-Allianz mit den sogenannten moderaten arabischen Staaten - Saudi-Arabien, Jordanien, Ägypten und den kleineren Golfmonarchien. Die strategische Ausrichtung der Nah- und Mittelostpolitik auf die konfrontative Gegenmachtbildung zum Iran hat in den letzten Monaten Gestalt angenommen. Die Eindämmung des Iran ist zum organisierenden Prinzip der amerikanischen Politik in der Region geworden. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
