Rückschritt in Serbien

Abstract

Beste Aussichten, am 13. Juni 2004 die erste Runde der serbischen Präsidentenwahl für sich zu entscheiden, hat der Kandidat der extremistischen, national-populistischen Serbischen Radikalen Partei (SRS), der Bautechniker Tomislav Nikolić (52). Im sogenannten demokratischen Lager hat man sich trotz der befürchteten verheerenden innen- und außenpolitischen Folgen eines etwaigen Wahlsiegs von Nikolić nicht auf einen gemeinsamen Kandidaten einigen können. Im Gegenteil: Der hemmungslose Streit der gespaltenen Wendepolitiker fördert Politikverdrossenheit in breiten Kreisen der Bevölkerung und stärkt die Radikalen. Im Vorfeld der bevorstehenden Wahl sollte der Westen einerseits vermeiden, durch überzogene Sympathiekundgebungen für den von EU und USA bevorzugten Kandidaten, den Vorsitzenden der Demokratischen Partei (DS), den Psychologen Bojan Tadić (46), eine Trotzreaktion der Wähler zu provozieren. Andererseits müßte der Westen, angesichts der Schlüsselrolle Serbiens für die Region, mit einer wohldurchdachten Kombination von Anreizen und Androhungen die Voraussetzungen zur Stabilisierung dieses Landes schaffen.
