Aufräumarbeiten und neue Impulse für Europa: Die Ratspräsidentschaft Österreichs

Abstract

Seit Januar bekleidet Österreich den Halbjahresvorsitz in der Europäischen Union. In der Vorbereitung auf die Ratspräsidentschaft war Wien darauf bedacht, die Diskussion um den Zustand der EU zu entdramatisieren und den Erwartungsdruck im Hinblick auf die Lösung der Krise um den Verfassungsvertrag klein zu halten. Zwar betont die österreichische Regierung, sie verstehe den Vorsitz als 'Dienstleistung an der Gemeinschaft', doch wird sie auch versuchen, auf europäischer Ebene besondere, den eigenen Präferenzen folgende Akzente zu setzen. Hierzu gehören Initiativen in den Bereichen Wachstum und Beschäftigung sowie auf dem Feld der Politik gegenüber dem Westbalkan. Voraussichtlich wird Österreich auch zur Debatte über den Verfassungsvertrag beitragen, wenngleich Wien in dieser Frage gegenwärtig widersprüchliche Signale aussendet. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
