Wie stabil sind die konfuzianischen Demokratien? Nach den Wahlen in Südkorea und Taiwan

Abstract

Am 15. April 2004 verhalfen die südkoreanischen Wähler einer bis dahin unbedeutenden linksliberalen Partei, die sich zur Entspannung der Beziehungen mit Nordkorea bekennt, zur absoluten Mehrheit in der Nationalversammlung. Einen Monat zuvor war Taiwans Präsident Chen Shuibian mit einer Politik im Amt bestätigt worden, die die Eigenständigkeit des Landes gegenüber der Volksrepublik China betont. Noch vor zehn Jahren wären solche Vorgänge weder in Taiwan noch in Südkorea denkbar gewesen. Sie vollziehen sich vor dem Hintergrund einer verschärften inneren Polarisierung, die die Frage nach der Stabilität der beiden ostasiatischen Demokratien und damit nach ihrer Bedeutung als Modell für die Gesamtregion aufwirft.
