Bulgarien strebt in die Eurozone: Das wirtschaftlich schwächste EU-Mitglied will die starke gemeinsame Währung

Abstract

Am 27. Januar 2010 kündigte Bulgarien an, es wolle rasch der Wirtschafts- und Währungsunion (WWU) beitreten. Sofia stützt sich auf sein gutes Abschneiden bei der Bewältigung der globalen Wirtschaftskrise: Der Rückgang des Bruttoinlandsprodukts (BIP) war moderat, der bulgarische Haushaltssaldo ist mit großem Abstand EU-weit der ausgeglichenste. Auch der öffentliche Schuldenstand ist mit nur 16 Prozent des BIP vernachlässigbar gering. Die Erfahrung anderer Länder, die wie Bulgarien eine feste Wechselkursbindung haben, zeigt jedoch, dass der WWU-Beitritt kein währungspolitischer Spaziergang ist
