Eine neue NATO? Der Beitritt der sieben mitteleuropäischen Staaten zum Bündnis

Abstract

Mit der Hinterlegung der Ratifikationsurkunden in Washington traten am 29. März 2004, fast auf den Tag 55 Jahre nach der Gründung des Atlantischen Bündnisses, sieben neue Mitglieder - Bulgarien, Estland, Lettland, Litauen, Rumänien, Slowakei und Slowenien - der NATO bei. Statt ursprünglich 12 gehören ihr nun 26 Staaten an. Wie kam es zu dieser »großen« Erweiterungsrunde, die nach Berechnungen der RAND Corporation Kosten in Höhe von 40 Mrd. US-Dollar verursachen könnte? Ein Blick auf den Erweiterungsprozeß macht es verständlicher, warum sich die Allianz zu diesem Schritt entschlossen hat. Was bringen die neuen Mitglieder in das Bündnis ein, was erwarten sie von diesem? Welchen Beitrag erwartet die NATO von ihnen, werden sie eher eine Bereicherung oder eine Belastung sein?
