Abstract

Der Umgang mit Iran bleibt auch nach der im März 2005 erzielten amerikanisch-europäischen Einigung auf eine gemeinsame Taktik im Atomkonflikt eine der potentiell strittigsten Fragen in den transatlantischen Beziehungen. Die Bush-Administration unterstützt die Verhandlungen, in denen Großbritannien, Frankreich und Deutschland den Iran zu einer freiwilligen Selbstbeschränkung seines zivilen Nuklearprogramms bewegen wollen, zwar nicht mehr nur mit Worten; sie will auch zwei konkrete Anreize, die die Europäer dem Iran anbieten, nicht länger blockieren: die Aussicht auf Mitgliedschaft in der Welthandelsorganisation und den Verkauf von Ersatzteilen für Passagierflugzeuge. Aber von einer aktiven Unterstützung der Verhandlungen, gar von einem Einschwenken der Bush-Administration auf eine Politik des 'engagement' kann keine Rede sein. (SWP-aktuell / SWP)
