Ottawas Ultimatum an die NATO: 1000 Soldaten sollen das kanadische Kontingent in Kandahar unterstützen

Abstract

Im Januar 2008 hat das »Independent Panel on Canada's Future Role in Afghanistan« in Ottawa seinen mit Spannung erwarteten Abschlussbericht vorgelegt. Die vom früheren Außenminister John Manley geleitete Kommission hat der Regierung Harper empfohlen, die unbefristete Fortführung der kanadischen ISAF-Mission in Kandahar nach 2009 an die Erfüllung von zwei zentralen Vorbedingungen zu knüpfen: Erstens müsse die Regierung Helikopter und unbemannte Luftfahrzeuge beschaffen. Zweitens müsse in Kandahar eine zusätzliche Kampftruppe mit 1000 Soldaten von anderen NATO-Mitgliedern bzw. Staaten, die an der ISAF-Mission teilnehmen, bereitgestellt werden. Dieses kanadische Ultimatum wird die Agenda des Bukarester NATO-Gipfels im April bestimmen
