Abstract

Seit Aufhebung des Kriegsrechts 1987 hat sich Taiwan in beeindruckendem Tempo zu einer reifen Demokratie entwickelt. Anfang 2016 gewann die Kandidatin der Demokratischen Fortschrittspartei (DPP), Tsai Ing-wen, die Präsidentschaftswahlen. Während ihrer bisherigen Amtszeit folgten Meilensteine für die Achtung der Menschenrechte, etwa die Aussetzung der Todesstrafe. Allerdings steht die Entwicklung in Taiwan im Kontrast zur zunehmend autoritären und nationalistischen Herrschaft unter Xi Jinping auf dem chinesischen Festland. Die sich weiter vertiefende politische Kluft zwischen den beiden Seiten der Taiwanstraße erhöht das Konfliktpotential.
