Das RWI Essen als Hort unabhängiger Wissenschaft

Abstract

Im Januar hat eine unabhängige Expertenkommission unser Institut begangen und so im Auftrag der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft turnusgemäß unsere Arbeit bewertet. Deren Evaluierungsbericht erwarten wir in gespannter Zuversicht. Vor kurzem wurde nun in der Öffentlichkeit bekannt, dass eines der Gründungsmitglieder des RWI Essen e.V., der Gesamtverband des Deutschen Steinkohlebergbaus (GVSt), seine Mitgliedschaft gekündigt hat (vgl. z.B. Rheinische Post vom 14. April 2005). Gerade in der Region fragen sich daher viele, was dies in dieser Situation für uns bedeutet (vgl. z.B. Welt am Sonntag vom 10. April 2005; Leserbrief dazu von Leibniz-Präsident Hans-Olaf Henkel). Eines ist klar: Hierbei geht es um Politik und nicht um die Qualität unserer Forschung und wirtschaftspolitischen Beratung. Denn gute wirtschaftspolitische Beratung muss unabhängig sein und kann niemals allen gleichermaßen gefallen, wenn sie etwas taugen soll. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt es kurz zu erläutern, was der Auftrag des RWI Essen ist und welche ehrenvolle, aber durchaus begrenzte Rolle seine Mitglieder spielen.
