Abstract

Robert Solow postulierte 1956 in einem bahnbrechenden Aufsatz, dass technischer Fortschritt die einzig mögliche Quelle für langfristiges Wirtschaftswachstum sei. Im folgenden Jahr konnte er nachweisen, dass sich das Wirtschaftswachstum der USA in der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts in der Tat fast vollständig mit technischem Fortschritt erklären ließ. Diese beiden Arbeiten sind inzwischen zu Klassikern der makroökonomischen Analyse geworden: Jeder Ökonom kennt das Solow-Modell und das Solow-Residuum. Für entwicklungspolitische Debatten haben die beiden Begriffe in den 90er Jahren vor allem aufgrund der sprungartigen technologischen Weiterentwicklung neue Relevanz gewonnen.
