Abstract

Die Commerzbank, 1870 von Kaufleuten und Privatbankiers in Hamburg gegründet, widmete sich zunächst der Finanzierung des Außenhandels und der mittelständischen Wirtschaft, ehe sie im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einer führenden, international agierenden Geschäftsbank aufstieg. Anhand vieler, zum Teil bisher unerschlossener archivalischer Quellen beschreiben Stephan Paul, Friederike Sattler und Dieter Ziegler den Weg der Bank von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Sie widmen sich dabei den Erschütterungen durch die Finanzkrisen 1931/32 und 2008/09 ebenso wie den Herausforderungen der Digitalisierung des Bankgeschäfts in jüngster Zeit: ein faszinierendes Kapitel deutscher Wirtschaftsgeschichte.
