World Investment Report 2017: Investment and the Digital Economy

Abstract

The 2017 Report analyses the impact of digitalization on international investment and production. It examines how digital technologies are reshaping business models, global value chains and the organization of multinational enterprises. Particular attention is given to the emergence of digital firms, the growing importance of digital infrastructure and the changing relationship between technology and foreign direct investment. The Report evaluates the implications of these developments for developing countries, including opportunities related to innovation, market access and productivity growth, as well as challenges associated with digital divides and unequal access to technology. It also reviews recent trends in international investment flows and assesses policy options for adapting investment frameworks to the requirements of the digital economy. The analysis highlights strategies for leveraging digital transformation to support inclusive and sustainable development.
